Similan Islands
Similan Islands is located 100km north west of Phuket within the Andaman Sea. The Similan Islands group is one of the more well know island groups situated in the Andaman, mostly due to the beautiful wonders that can be found underneath the clear blue waters that surrounds the islands.
“Similan” comes for the Malay word “Sembilan” which means “nine” All of the 9 Similan Islands have also been given a number and a Thai name. A gorgeous feature of the different islands include massive boulders that stand out on the western and southern shores on several of the islands which makes these the ideal playground for divers. The picturesque white coral-sand beaches, that are more often than not deserted are another fantastic feature of the Similan Islands.
Declared a Marine National Park back in 1982 the islands can be visited on day tours, over night tours or just passing by when you go on another tour. The national park maintains a residential centre for rangers and other staff members on two of the islands:
- Ko Similan – is also known as island number 8 and happens to be the largest island out of the 9
- Ko Miang – is known as island number 4 which is mid-way through the group of islands.
You wont find any resorts or shops on the Similan Islands. If you wish to stay on the Similan Islands you have 3 choices that you can choose from:
- Tents or bungalows – these are provided to you by the National Marine Park
- Diving Liveaboard
- Overnight boat
Snorkelling, diving and sunbathing are some of the attractions to do while at the Similan Islands, but you can also participate in some trekking or hiking. Island number 4 and number 8 have some small trails that you can enjoy time exploring. Island number 8 also has a larger trail that will take you past numerous spectacular sights.
If you love animals and birds you will have the chance to see some spectacular, rare and exotic birds that make home on the islands along with other animals like:
- Flying Foxes
- Mangrove Monitor Lizards
- Hairy-Legged Crabs
You should note that the National Park is closed from the 15th of May through to the 1st of November due to monsoon season, so we’d suggest that if you’re wanting to go, you go before/after that date period.
